Low Hand Strategy in Omaha Poker

A nut low as a strategy in Omaha poker is the best possible low hand. We have to be careful when reading a low hand.

Many players confuse low hands and regard them discriminately, but there is a strategy in Omaha poker to easily do this. We must remember the hand rule in Omaha poker that says, a complete hand is a one that has two cards in the hand and three cards from the board. For instance, a board has 87532. This could possibly derive a 2367 but at times it's hard to readily pick up such number combination with one glance. Once we glance at our low hand and use the lowest combination of cards and check the Omaha hand rule—two hand cards and three board cards.

So we check the lowest. In the case of paired cards—which are termed counterfeited—we treat the cards this way—we think of the lowest yet best hand that is possible as a wheel, like a 54321, or should we say, 54, 321. Then, the highest and yet the worst hand possible, which is nevertheless a low hand, should be 87654, or should we say, 87,654. Now, we treat our low hand as a whole number. We start with the card which is the highest and work through downward. Hence, the player holding the hand or number nearest the number 54,321 should win. Or, in another case, it should tie with the player with the same thing.

The best low hand possible in Omaha is the nut low. If we combine a 876KQ board with A2, the A2 makes the best low. But 54 plus an A23KQ board complete a nut low. Then, 23 plus a board of 764KA is also a low nut with 64,321. The A2, on the other hand, makes 76,421. In case we get mixed up with card pairing and counterfeiting using the board, we can always ask the dealer on showdown for a reading of what our low hand exactly is.
